Laguna Niguel Regional Park Gets Trout Every Stocking Week This Winter, and Weekends Are When to Go

OC Parks posted its 2026–27 trout stocking schedule on October 13. It lists eleven stocking weeks between late November and the end of February, and Laguna Niguel Regional Park is on all eleven. The only other park on every week is Mile Square Regional Park. Yorba is on most of the list but not all of it, and Carbon Canyon, Clark, Irvine, and Tri-City appear only some weeks.

Construction crews will be working in the park through those same weeks. Moulton Niguel Water District is replacing the sewer pipeline that runs under the park, with work scheduled Monday through Friday and completion expected in spring 2027. So trout season and the construction project share the same months and the same weekdays. The fish go in during the week, and Saturday and Sunday are the days with fresh stocking behind them and no work scheduled.

The stocking calendar, translated into weekends

OC Parks lists stocking by week, not by day, and says the schedule may change. Since the listing doesn't say which day of a week the trout will arrive, the weekend after each listed week is the first one when that week's stocking should have happened, assuming the schedule holds.

The first stocking week is Thanksgiving week, so the first trout weekend of the season is the Saturday and Sunday after the holiday, when family is often in town. After that, the calendar has two gaps. The first is the week of November 30, with no stocking listed between Thanksgiving week and December 7. The second runs from December 21 through New Year's, with nothing listed until the week of January 4. Once January begins, Laguna Niguel is on every listed week through February 26.

Trout are a winter-only fish here, according to the OC Parks park page, which says the lake carries catfish the rest of the year. Anyone 16 or older needs a California fishing license, at this park and every other OC Parks lake.

The crews keep a weekday schedule, too

The construction explains why weekends matter so much this season. The district is replacing nearly two miles of sewer force main inside the park. That pipeline carries wastewater from Moulton Niguel's largest pump station to the Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant. The new pipe is built to hold up better in severe storms and earthquakes. A $10.3 million federal grant covers much of the cost. It comes from FEMA's Hazard Mitigation Grant Program and is administered by the California Office of Emergency Services. Where the route passes through environmentally sensitive areas, the district plans to use trenchless methods instead of open trenches.

Work started in June 2024. The district's project page lists working hours of Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., with some specialized work running as late as 8 p.m. Trails close in phases so that some walking and bike paths stay open at any given time. Other sections of the park and some amenities may close as the work requires, and parking may be limited.

A Tuesday visit in January could mean freshly stocked trout, but also a rerouted trail and a smaller parking lot. On the Saturday after, that week's stocking should be done and the crew's scheduled hours don't apply. The work is expected to finish in spring 2027, so the stocking week of February 22 may be the last one of the season with construction still going on, depending on how the final phases go.

Without reservations, every shelter goes to whoever arrives first

The second change affects how weekends at the park work. OC Parks posted an alert on August 1, 2026 saying it will not issue shelter reservations, vendor permits, or special-event permits at Laguna Niguel Regional Park while the project is underway. According to the OC Parks alerts page, every shelter is first-come, first-served until the work is done.

In practice, no party can book a shelter months ahead, and no permitted event can claim part of the lawn on a stocking weekend. The shelters go to whoever gets there first. If you're planning a birthday, a team gathering, or a post-Thanksgiving picnic with visiting relatives on November 28, plan around arriving early. A reservation isn't an option this season.

Weekends cost a little more. OC Parks charges $3 per vehicle Monday through Friday and $5 on Saturday and Sunday, and most holidays follow the same weekday or weekend rate. For a winter of quieter fishing days, that $2 difference is easy to justify.

Hours are about to change as well. Laguna Niguel Regional Park has been on OC Parks' spring-summer schedule of 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., which ends when daylight saving time ends on November 1, 2026. Before planning a late-afternoon visit in November, check OC Parks for the new closing time, since evenings get dark early by the time the first stocking week arrives.

Before the first trout weekend

A short checklist for November 28 and every stocking weekend after it:

  • Renew or buy your license. The state requirement applies to everyone 16 and older, and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife sells licenses online.
  • Recheck the stocking list. OC Parks says it will update the schedule as dates change, so look at the schedule page the week before you go.
  • Sign up for the district's closure updates. Moulton Niguel posts park and traffic closure maps on its project page and sends email updates as phases change.
  • Check the OC Parks alerts page. The alerts page is where the county posts closures and shelter rules for the park.
  • Arrive early if you want a shelter. No reservations are being issued, so the first arrivals get the shelters.

Two city dates outside the construction zone

Because trails inside the regional park close in phases, the City of Laguna Niguel's fall programs at other parks are a good fit this year.

On Thursday, October 22, the city holds Haunted Trails Night at Crown Valley Park, 29751 Crown Valley Parkway, with entry from 6:30 to 9 p.m. The city's listing says it is not recommended for children under 10.

On November 5, the city hosts a free event called "What's in Your Pack?" on Salt Creek Trail, a hiking-preparation session with trail maps and a gear checklist. The city will postpone it if it rains. It falls four days after the regional park leaves its summer hours and less than three weeks before the first trout truck is due.

If you're planning your winter around the lake, I'm glad to share what I know about getting the most from these regional park weekends while the construction is underway. At Adam Nelson, I keep track of the projects that shape everyday life here in Laguna Niguel, and I'm always happy to talk about them. Let's Connect.
